Acts 8:8-25 | Success in Samaria
Simon the Sorcerer (Real or counterfeit?)
2 Thessalonians 2:9 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10 and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing.
“counterfeit”- pseudos (psyoo'-dos); a falsehood.
Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Samaritans vs. Jews
Luke 9:52 Jesus sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?"
John 4:9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
For the sake of unity the apostles are called to witness the Samaritans conversion
V.15 When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
Ephesians 1:13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit
Galatians 3:2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard?
Why did God withhold the Holy Spirit?
Acts 11:1 The apostles and the brothers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. 2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him 3 and said, "You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them." 4 Peter began and explained everything to them precisely as it had happened… 15 "As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' 17 So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could oppose God?"
Acts 15:8 God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us.
Was Simon a true believer or a false convert?
1. He was prideful (V.8)
2. He offers money for the apostle’s power (V.18-19)
3. Peter tells him to perish (V.20-21)
4. Insincere plea? (V.24)
“There’s no confession; there’s no self-judgment; there’s no acknowledging of sin. There’s no exhibit of confidence in the Lord; there’s no asking for forgiveness; there’s no repentance, nothing, but a kind of scornful comment.”
Eisegesis- is the process of interpreting a text or portion of text in such a way that the process introduces one's own presuppositions, agendas, or biases into and onto the text.
Exegesis- From the Greek “to lead out”. It is the thorough investigation of a Biblical text, within its various context, to discover the original meaning.
Did Simon believe?
V.12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized.
Do you believe?
1. Belief in Jesus
1 John 5:1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God… 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
2. Brotherly love
John 13:34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
1 John 2:9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.
1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death.
3. Behavior that Obeys
Luke 6:46 "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?
1 John 1:6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
Does it matter?
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.
