Acts 5:11-42 | Purity Power & Persecution
I. Purity (1-11)
1 Corinthians 5:6 Don't you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough?
See 1 Corinthians 11:17
1 Peter 4:17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God
V.14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.
V.13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.
(5:5,11) Great fear seized all who heard
II. Power (V.12-16)
V.12 The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people.
V.15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed.
Prayer answered and fulfilled
Acts 4:30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus."
An authenticating mark of the apostles
2 Corinthians 12:12 The things that mark an apostle-signs, wonders and miracles-were done among you with great perseverance.
Hebrews 2:3 This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4 God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
Acts 4:33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all.
A bridged gap between belief and behavior
V.14 more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.
V.13 “They were highly regarded by the people.”
Titus 2:7 In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
III. Persecution (V. 17-42)
Acts 23:8 The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and that there are neither angels nor spirits
Mishnah, “Since Rabban Gamaliel the elder died there has been no more reverence for the law. Purity and abstinence died out at the same time.”
Acts 22:3 Under Gamaliel I was thoroughly trained in the law of our fathers
Jesus’ words are true
John 15:20 If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.
John 16:2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
Luke 6:22 Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. 23 "Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven.
Romans 8:18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.
Joshua 7:1 But the Israelites acted unfaithfully in regard to the devoted things; Achan… of the tribe of Judah, took some of them. So the LORD's anger burned against Israel… 10 The LORD said to Joshua, "Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? 11 Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. 12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction. … 15 He who is caught with the devoted things shall be destroyed by fire, along with all that belongs to him. He has violated the covenant of the LORD and has done a disgraceful thing in Israel!
We cannot expect to progress in power
individually or as a church when there is hidden sin
James 5:14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.
